Brief business description

Browns manages to be quintessentially British while combining a French brasserie with an American burger joint. The result is vivacious and good humoured, while the portions are large and it is very popular with children. The menu offers a bit of everything; burgers, salads, pasta and steaks. The food is wholesome and plentiful and it's a great place for lunch with the kids.

  • 4 Great food and wine!

We have been here a couple of times and had a great time. The last time it was great weather so we could sit outside, which was gorgeous, and gave you a whole feel of the continental lifestyle!I had the seabass and it was awesome. The fish otpions were varied which makes a change. We had a couple of bottles of the chateau neuf de pape and I would really recommend this as a good price and an excellent wine. The service was good. I noticed in the previous reviews they said it was packed with younger people on their way out for a night, this is true, but the bar area is seperate to the dining room, so if you are going for dinner, don't let this put you off. Some friends of mine went there on a first date, which I always think is a good testament, the right mix of atmosphere but quite enough to talk!

  • 2 Browner than it should be

One of the Browns chain of restaurants, this one seems to be popular with groups of lads and lasses painting the town red on a Friday and Saturday night - perhaps because of the close proximity of the road, which allows them to cruise past in their cars a few times before going in. Certainly the place is not so close to the river as Browns' website will have you believe, given that there's both the road and a promenade between you and the water, but you'll get a pretty decent view from upstairs. Me, I occasionally drop in at off-peak times during the day or early evening, tempted by the large outdoor terrace areas and a change of scene. On the plus side, this is a good place to head to if you fancy a cocktail in lively surroundings. The staff are professional and seem to know what they're doing - or they did after my friend politely pointed out that hers was supposed to have ginger beer in it. (He made her a fresh one.) Their selection is extensive, and at around £6 each they're not extortionately priced. I had an extra spicy Bloody Mary, complete with huge stick of celery, for £5.50.The place also seems to be popular with families during the day, and has a special children's menu. Something's badly amiss with the food, though. In fairness it's one of the cheaper eateries in Windsor, but the food they serve just doesn't seem to be very nice. For example, a few days ago I ordered fish stew "with red mullet, cod and clams in a light tomato, fennel and fish broth served with crusty bread aioli" for £9.50. Mmmm... sounds yummy, huh? Er, no. The light broth turned out to be a hearty tomato ratatouille with big chunks of carrot and celery in it. I had trouble finding the fish. It wasn't badly cooked, just not very palatable, so I ate what I could and left the rest.Personally I prefer The River House a few minutes away. Don't waste your money at Browns unless you have a young family to feed (daytimes), are out on the pull (evenings), or have a cocktail habit (anytime).

    Lacrimosa
